Summary: Plaintiff underwent anterior cervical fusion for a cervical spine injury. After surgery, he was placed in ICU. The next morning he had several cardiac episodes of pre-ventricular contractions (PVC). Later that day he was transferred to a general floor and later that night he was found dead in his hospital bed. Plaintiff’s estate contended that the PVC episodes should have been an indicator that there was a cardiac problem. Defense argued that the PVCs were a transient cardiac anomaly caused by fluid changes during surgery and that Plaintiff’s death was caused by a small piece of plaque which ruptured his right coronary artery causing a total occlusion which was unforeseeable and not the result of negligence.
