Dexter Haynes was admitted to Ingalls Memorial Hospital with a perforated appendix which required urgent surgical intervention. Mr. Haynes had a long history of heart problems including cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and the implantation of a pacemaker. The appendectomy surgery was successful but when the anesthesiologist extubated the patient 45 minutes postoperatively, his oxygen saturation fell. Dexter was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. The estate contended that the anesthesiologist failed to perform extubation criteria prior to removal of the endotracheal tube and maintained that the decreasing oxygen saturation levels were indicative of inadequate airway support. The defense contended that Mr. Haynes’ death was a result of his underlying cardiac condition.
